Sailboat vs. Powerboat Dockage: What’s Different?

By Tal Fox Amit · Jun 14, 2026 · 4 min read

Draft, air draft, and beam mean sailboats and powerboats need different docks. Here’s how to find the right fit.

Sailboats and powerboats of the same length can have very different dockage needs. Three numbers usually decide the fit: draft, air draft, and beam.

Draft is the big one for sailboats

Sailboats often draw 5–8+ feet, so the dock's controlling depth at low tide matters most. Always confirm depth with margin to spare, we list each dock's depth so deep-draft boats can filter accordingly.

Air draft and fixed bridges

A tall mast means air draft matters. Some routes to the ocean have fixed bridges with limited clearance. No-fixed-bridge docks (like much of the Las Olas Isles and Harbor Beach) are ideal for tall rigs.

Powerboats: power and beam

Powerboats are usually more flexible on depth but may need higher-amperage shore power (50A/100A) and adequate beam clearance between pilings. We confirm power and width for each dock.

Let the quote check the fit

Enter your LOA, beam, and draft on any listing and FoxStays flags any fit issues before you request to book, for sail and power alike.
