10 Questions to Ask Before Renting a Dock

By Tal Fox Amit · Jun 16, 2026 · 4 min read

A quick checklist to make sure a dock truly fits your vessel and your plans before you book.

A few good questions up front prevent surprises at the seawall. Run through these before you commit to any dock, FoxStays confirms most of them for you, but it pays to be sure.

The checklist

Cover the essentials:

  • What is the usable length, and will it fit my true LOA with lines and fenders?
  • What is the controlling water depth at low tide versus my draft?
  • What beam can the slip handle, and are there pilings to consider?
  • What shore power is available (30A/50A/100A), and is it metered?
  • Are there fixed bridges between the dock and the inlet (air-draft limits)?
  • Is liveaboard permitted, if I need it?
  • Is there parking, water, and easy, safe access?
  • What are the house rules and check-in process?
  • What are the nightly, monthly, and seasonal rates?
  • What happens in a storm, and is insurance required?

We do the homework

Every FoxStays dock is verified for length, beam, draft, and power, and our quote flags any fit issues, so most of this is answered before you ever book.
